THC and CBD

Updated: Apr 12, 2022

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most common cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. Unlike the more famous THC, however, CBD does not produce a cognitive “high.” While THC can inspire euphoria and alter consciousness, many consumers find that CBD does not produce a notable change in cognition. Rather, CBD is expected to relieve anxiety and lift mood without causing cognitive impairment (Zuardi, 2017). It is important to note, however, that the subtle cognitive effects of all cannabinoids vary drastically from person to person. In terms of medical potential, CBD has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an anticonvulsant treatment for rare forms of intractable epilepsy. In addition, the compound is expected to have strong potential as an anti-inflammatory agent and neuroprotective antioxidant.

What is THC?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant. While many different varieties of cannabis exist, cultivars that produce high levels of THC often dominate both adult-use and medical cannabis access points. This is the cannabinoid that made the cannabis plant so famous, stimulating appetite, feelings of euphoria, muscle relaxation, and changes in cognition. Medicinally, THC has shown strong potential an analgesic (pain killer), antiemetic (anti-nausea), muscle relaxant, sedative, and anti-tumoral agent (Anderson, 1980; Wilkinson, 2010; Wakley, 2011; Ladin, 2016).
